Settler Colonialism and Historical Revisionism”

Our 2025 Symposium builds on the success of our 2024 Symposium, which featured, among others, Natan Sharansky, Prof Ilan Troen, Prof Gil Troy, Izabella Tabarovsky, Dr Charles Asher Small, Prof Wayne Horowitz and Dr Sheree Trotter.

Certain ideologies emanating from academia regarding Israel and the Jewish people have created false narratives that contribute greatly to the rise in antisemitism on Western campuses and in society generally. These must be understood, critiqued and deconstructed. They include, but are not limited to, settler colonial ideology, decolonisation, post-colonial narratives, critical theory and anti-Zionism.

The IEJ Academic Symposium 2025 will provide a platform for expert exploration of these ideas. It will address historical revisionism and false narratives, and strengthen Jewish identity.

IEJ co-signed a letter with other organisations, expressing grave concern over the recent joint declaration by New Zealand and 24 other nations condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza and accusing it of obstructing humanitarian aid.

Hon Alfred Ngaro and Dr Sheree Trotter joined a delegation to meet with New Zealand government officials, to urge New Zealand not to recognise Palestinian statehood. The delegation consisted of Christian and community leaders and was led by Pastor Nigel Woodley. Knowing that NZ’s current policy is to eventually recognise statehood, we were advised to go with a message urging delay (irrespective of our own view of the matter): we argued that such recognition, if any, should not happen until certain conditions are met. To do otherwise would reward terrorism.

A group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait people of Australia, led by the Australian Council for the Pacific One New Man issued a powerful statement of support for Israel.

We, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people, as custodians of the land of Australia, declare to the Israel nation, its people, and its government, that we DO NOT stand with the government of Australia in recognising Palestine as a nation state.

Dr Sheree Trotter and husband Perry held a one day seminar in Whanganui on Israel and Antisemitism. It was an honour to be welcomed onto the sacred whenua (land) of Pakaitore by the Taumata Karaitiana (Te Awa Tupua), the kaumatua and kuia (elders).

Greg Bouwer exposes the selective cultural relativism of Te Pāti Māori and others. He shows that the New Zealand left’s embrace of “Palestine” is less about genuine respect for cultural boundaries and more about adopting whatever symbols best serve their ideological narrative. The keffiyah becomes a prop in their theatre of solidarity – a borrowed identity that flatters their self-image as global freedom fighters, even as it betrays their own professed principles.

JEWISH PEOPLEHOOD IN AN AGE OF ANTIZIONISM

Adam Louis-Klein argues that antisemitism is not a set of ideas to debate, but a structure of power. It mobilizes majorities to redefine what’s real—so that Jewish resistance, Jewish speech, Jewish life itself, becomes not just wrong, or criticizable, but illegible.
